Recently opened in the leafy South side Isaacs shops is Soul Cartel Farr Side Cafe, which we predict will quickly become a beloved suburban gem.
Influenced by American BBQ and the food of Southern America, particularly that from N’awlins, Soul Cartel started off with a food truck at The Hamlet, in Braddon, almost 18 months ago and is now ready to bring back some life to neglected Isaacs shops.
Owners father and son team Darren and Zack Goddard and friend Pete Mcgreevy live locally with Darren saying that, “Isaacs shops has been dead for too long, and needed to be bought back to life. We hope that we can be part of the start of that growth. Isaacs residents deserve better than what they have had.” He also said, “Hoping we can run some market stalls once a month” and “Thinking of opening some evenings if demand is there.”
As a local, I could not be happier with my new neighbours and the reawakening of Isaacs shops . I am slowly making my way through the all day brunch menu and am yet to come across a bad dish. The highlight so far has been the Elvis breakfast – Waffles, peanut butter ice cream, bacon, peanut praline crumb, sliced banana and maple syrup – it is sweet, salty, and deeply satisfying!
We love that it is a truly family affair, with Zack heading up the kitchen, his brother Jared behind the coffee machine, Darren and his mum Patricia help out with the ‘home’ baking and BBQ and the floor manager is Corey, a childhood school friend. It feels like a true local cafe and I can’t wait to see them grow the menu and introduce more lunch-time red basket specials. The red basket special that I had there took me back to my time living in America – it was a classic old school juicy Double Cheeseburger with waffle fries.
