I still have the photo of the first time we visited the Hartley Hall Markets – my then two-year-old daughter taking her first pony ride, with a big uncertain smile on her face. Even now, so many years later, we always make sure we stop to watch a new generation of ‘first time’ pony riders.
For the past 28 years, on the first Sunday of the month, the small community of Hall becomes a bustling regional hub as the Hartley Hall Markets sets up for the day.
Attracting up to 300 stallholders from across the ACT and NSW, these markets boast a plethora of treasures for the finding. The sprawling space hosts hand-crafted goods, homewares and sculptures from local artists intermingled with potted plants, fresh flowers and pet treats for your furry friends. You can also stock your pantry with regional farm-fresh produce including seasonal fruit and vegetables, baked goods, preserves and coffee beans.
And don’t worry about going out there on an empty stomach. From the Hartley Lifecare sausage sizzle, to gozleme, to baked potatoes and even our favourite the Greek kebab stall, you will find something savoury (and sweet) to eat. Then you just need to find a spot to sit, eat and enjoy the entertainment.
The roster of regular entertainers includes Canberra entertainer Johnny Huckle, a pan pipe band, and for children there are kids’ entertainers, pony rides, a jumping castle, show rides, face painting and fake tattoos.
The Hartley Hall Markets were the idea of Jennie Cameron AM, as a way to raise funds for Hartley Lifecare. Volunteers help with the market each month, and there is a core group of 12 dedicated volunteers who have been assisting with the markets for the past 20 years.
While our days of pony rides may be over, we have a lot of new favourite stall holders at the markets that we regularly go back to visit.
