Aspen Island Theatre Company’s Public Theatre is almost here! Only a couple of weeks to go and Civic Square will be transformed into a space where local artists and patrons come together to interact and enjoy live performances.
Between the 17th and 29th of November 2015, Civic Square will become a version of City Dionysia, the classical open air Greek theatre.
The Public Theatre program is filled with a range of diverse productions covering theatre, cabaret, music, film, talks and public forums designed to entertain and make you think.
It launches with How Are You?; a piece of theatre presented by The Anchor and AITC that takes a his and hers look at a relationship. This is a raw and tender (and funny) piece that has the protagonists talking through their experiences, choices, and thoughts.
Also part of the program, is the classic Shakespearean play Hamlet, which has been modernised into a comical one man show by Lightbulbhead. They come to Canberra straight from performing for audiences in Sydney and Melbourne at their respective Fringe festivals.
Lightbulbhead keeps true to the Hamlet plots; a father dead, a son avenging him and on the verge (if not over) of going mad, an uncle guilty of murder who marries his dead brother’s wife, a girlfriend who just doesn’t seem to understand Hamlet. Shakespeare seemed to be ahead of his time with what could be considered a modern day telenovela if you ever heard one!
