What is better than eating fresh Australian seafood? Doing so with a water view! Located on the Kingston Foreshore, C Seafood & Oyster Bar has one of the best dining spots in Canberra, with uninterrupted Lake Burley Griffin views out to the Carillon.
With an exciting lineup of great value winter specials, and an emphasis on share plates it felt like the perfect time to visit and get our fill of fresh seafood and oysters.
Chef’s Choice
The Chef’s Choice menu is a great way to taste test their newly revamped menu that emphasises the share plates. For $65 per person the Chef Kuek Shaoyi & Chef Dan Keogh ‘surprise’ you with some of their favourite seasonal dishes.
On the winter’s evening we visited, we had a cosy window seat indoors. Quickly forgetting the chill outside, we settled in for an evening of ‘surprises’ and attentive staff.
After checking if we had any allergies or food aversions, our meal(s) came out, we ate:
Freshly Shucked Oysters
Kingfish Sashimi – Hiramasa Kingfish, dill pickles, orange marmalade, wasabi cheese custard, vegemite soy glaze
Calamari – Fried, salt n pepper dusted, shallots, chilli, black beans
BBQ Whole Prawns – Whole BBQ prawns on hot rocks, lemon herb butter, grilled lemon, peel yourself
Kimchi Pancake – Mussels, oysters, kimchi, coriander, wasabi mayo
Succulent Lamb – Twice cooked shoulder, green pea puree, taramasalata, buttered green peas, red wine jus
Octopus – Chargrilled octopus, green chutney potatoes.
I loved the variety of dishes and flavours, and even though they all tasted quite different they all had a common thread of being simply but beautifully prepared – they made the ingredients shine. We certainly tried a few dishes that I would not have ordered if left to my own devices – the Hiramasa Kingfish sashimi complete with its vegemite(!!!) soy glaze was one particular example. But it just worked, with the saltiness of the vegemite and the crunch of the pickle – it was slightly addictive and I found myself eating more than my fair share!
Then we had dessert, because hello; dessert! One Raspberry Mille Fuille with orange, cardaomon, raspberry, cream Chantilly and one Brulee with Madgascan vanilla bean, caramelised bananas, dulce de leche, pate sable perfectly capped off the evening.
